Happy One Month, Jed!

Jed turned one month old today! He celebrated by spending most of his day asleep, indulging in a little bit of crying, eating, and, based on the first picture, being very stressed out.

Jed at three weeks

Jed showing off his outfit from Sherry

Jed ate too many chips, but he soldiered on to finish all three enchiladas and that second beer.

Why?

Fine. I'll just suffer in silence.

That's right, ladies. I'm sporting some Demon Deacon bling.

tank!

Jed is growing fast: he is up from a low of 5 lbs. 8 oz. to the new butterball weight of 6 lbs. 7 oz! And today his gross belly button stump finally detached itself! He'll be driving before we know it!
Here are some pictures from yesterday and today.

Quiet please!

Motherhood's really not that hard.

a very special thank you

With all the ups and downs of our new life, we've forgotten to make a very special acknowledgment on our blog. We've sung the praises of our doctors at Duke Women's Health Associates and Duke University Hospital before, but we really cannot express our gratitude for the support, helpfulness, kindness, and knowledge that everyone, from the doctors to the ladies who bring the food trays, showed to us during our early hospital stays and especially during our labor and delivery.

Dr. Anne Ford and nurses Jenn and Julie delivered Jed while Diane, another labor and delivery nurse, watched over the first part of our labor. Because we had not attended any birthing classes, Eric and I both relied heavily on their guidance, and we really appreciate all the help, coaching, and direction they gave us. Our post-partum nurses, Peggy in particular, really helped us learn how to take good care of Jed and helped me make a pretty speedy recovery.

And because Jed tried to arrive in mid-April, we will always be thankful for all the Duke Women's Health Associates doctors who helped us keep him cooking a bit longer. In addition to Dr. Ford, Doctors Gray, Nieves, and Piscitelli and nurse practitioner Connie all worked to help Jed arrive a bit later than he wanted.

Finally, if you're so inclined, feel free to make a gift to Duke Medicine. Click here to donate online or here to print a brochure. Please direct your gift to Friends of Duke Medicine.

If you make a gift, please click on the button to dedicate the gift and make it in honor of "Duke Women's Health Associates and the nurses and staff at the Duke Birthing Center for their care of the David Family and the safe delivery of Jed David." Although the designation box looks small, that entire phrase (in quotes) will fit. And below that, the form asks for a name and address to notify the honoree; please have the university send that to Dr. Anne Ford, Duke Women's Health Associates, 1512 E. Franklin Street, Suite 100, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

an update from the pediatrician

Jed had another check up today, with excellent results! His jaundice has cleared up, so no more light blanket! And he's regaining weight: he's back up to 5 lbs, 10.5 oz! Of course, most of that heft is hair.

update from the world of Jed

Jed's bilirubin level (jaundice indicator) was down today, so we don't have to go back to the doctor for yet another heel prick tomorrow! He's still on the light blanket, but hopefully today's lower level is a sign of things to come.

I tried to upload a couple of videos tonight, but we experienced some technical difficulties. Hopefully, we'll be able to make that happen tomorrow.

Otherwise, things are pretty quiet. Marlene is here acting as our housekeeper, and Eric is attempting to keep up his studies for the bar between feeding and diapering! Jed eats every three hours and sleeps soundly between feedings, which leaves us with about two to two-and-a-half hours between the end of one feeding and the beginning of the next. I'm trying to learn to catch naps, but so far, I'm not too good at making efficient use of that time!

And speaking of time, I have an hour left before he eats again, so I'm wrapping this up and heading for the sofa or bed!

firsts for the day

Jed had his first appointment with his pediatrician today. I liked her, although I don't think Jed appreciated being poked and prodded. He's still a bit jaundiced, so we're keeping his light blanket for the time being.

And I referred to "my son" for the first time. How strange did that sound to my own ears?!

Tomorrow, I will get behind the wheel for the first time with him in the car (he has to have another jaundice blood test tomorrow), so the firsts keep coming, possibly including the first time I've driven somewhere and obeyed every single traffic law.

Otherwise, things are going pretty smoothly. Eric and I are both experiencing the normal anxieties and joys and ups and downs of our new responsibility, but the grandparents are helping a lot and so far, I don't think we've done any major damage to the kid!

1 down, 5 thousand to go

We survived our first night at home. Jed likes his new house and is eating and sleeping well. Mommy and Daddy like the house too. Eating and sleeping . . . not so much.

heading home!

We are heading home as soon as the nurse comes in to go over our discharge papers!

Hanging with Ted

Die-hard Democrat that he is, Jed is going to stay another day or two at the hospital to make sure Ted Kennedy is OK.

Jed is still doing great, but the doctors want to keep him for another day or two to improve his food intake and to make sure he is holding his temperature well enough. Kind of disappointing for us, but very normal for a kid his age.

new pictures

First off, Ted and Jed in the same hospital . . . a coincidence?

And now what you've all been waiting for: more pictures!

Jed: new master of the blogosphere

Jed is featured on Beyond Friendship Gate, Caroline's blog! What a wired baby!

We've had a very peaceful day here at the hospital, despite some amazing sounds coming from Jed's digestive system!

He is doing great, and we're hopeful that he'll get to come home with us tomorrow. He's maintaining his body temperature and never had trouble breathing, so eating is his only real hurdle. He's a champ at sucking, but he gets worn out pretty quickly, so he's having a little bit of trouble eating an ounce or close to an ounce at each feeding. But he's getting stronger all the time... I think maybe he diverts too much energy to keeping all that hair standing up!

The winner is . . .

Joseph Doc "Jed" David.

Yes, we picked the name that almost no one picked in the poll (two votes, one of which was ours!). Joseph is my maternal grandfather's name and my father's middle name. Doc was Sarah's maternal grandfather's nickname. We decided to call him Jed because it's a little unique, and, well, he just looks like a Jed to us.

For the record, he is not named for Celtics coach Doc Rivers or Haitian dictators Papa and Baby Doc Duvalier.
