we're back!

We arrived home safely last night after a rather trying day of travel with Jed, which followed a rather trying overnight with him. I won't go into the details but I believe that everyone in our hotel Saturday night and early Sunday morning along everyone on our flight yesterday will remember their trips for a long, long time.

Thankfully, the rest of the trip was really great, but I failed to take a single snap of Jed. It seemed like we were always in the throes of trying to get him to nap or get him or ourselves fed or get ready for an event. I didn't even take family group pictures!

We had beautiful weather and an outstanding time with all the Davids and Mabaraks and Dara's family. We enjoyed a bonfire complete with a couple of shooting stars, breakfasts and brunches, dinners, dancing, and even fireworks! Thanks to Grandma and Grandpa Woodard for coming along to help out with Jed; their extra hands really let us have a lot of fun over the weekend!

The wedding ceremony itself was lovely. Perfect, actually. Frankly, excepting our wedding, it was the most beautiful wedding I've ever attended. Eric did a great job and had at least 20 requests to marry other people! (Yes, Eric officiated, and yes, it was legal!)

Enjoy some pictures while I get caught up on the laundry!

Meanwhile, back in Raleigh . . .

Winston made a new friend! We left him with our neighbor who did a wonderful job. He's not very patient with the camera, so I was thrilled when "he" emailed me from camp with these shots!! If you need a dog sitter in the Raleigh area, please let us know; we have found a great one! He returned with gourmet treats, and she even walked him home last night, which, given our exhausting day, was a service I welcomed more than she could imagine!

we're off like a herd of turtles

Jed has a fresh haircut and his cool-weather clothes are packed so I guess he's ready to head to Vermont tomorrow . . . as for Eric and me, that's another story, but I'm certainly looking forward to a break from today's humidity and subsequent mosquito attack.

We'll have new pictures, hopefully with lots of fall color, early next week!

Lucy comes to town!

Seeing Caroline's post this morning reminded me that I have pictures of our visit to post, too! On Friday, Caroline and Lucy came to see us as part of their whirlwind tour of North Carolina and Florida. We had a brief but very nice visit. Lucy is a sweet, sweet little girl and is as quick with a smile as Jed! And Jed and Lucy were pretty interested in each other, much more so than during their last visit. Jed gave her a few rough grabs and pokes but after I said "gentle" to him and then thought to follow that with, "like with Winston," he started patting her the same way he pats W!

and the four of us . . . unfortunately, I was using the timer to take this and my camera's batteries were low, so it's not the best quality but it captures the spirit of the afternoon!

In other news, Jed had a check-up yesterday and weighed in at a healthy 25 pounds, which puts him in the fiftieth percentile for weight, and stretched out to 31 inches, putting him in the eightieth percentile for height! No more Short-Fat for Jed!

enough text!!

back to the pictures, please!

I'm now thinking fleur de lis might be his first word.

Thanks for the mum, Dorothy!

When restrained from walking into the street, Jed goes limp . . . civil disobedience already! We're so proud!

playschool update

Today, our drop-off was a lot easier. Jed cried but wasn't screaming and clutching me like Tuesday. He started fussing in the parking lot and continued sniffing as we walked to his classroom but he made it half-way down the hall before starting to really cry and reaching to be carried. And when I picked him up, he smiled and waved to everyone as we left.

We also got our first preschool newsletter today. Here's what it said about the one-year-old class: "Our one year old class has been adjusting to being with their teachers and to being at school in the mornings. They love cheerios and going outside."

Given that I've yet to see his classmate upset about being at school (despite J's best efforts at showing her how it's done), and because they started going outside two times to keep Jed happy and they let him carry a bag of cheerios around in another effort to keep him content, I'm pretty sure the one-year-old update was aimed at trying to put a positive spin on Jed's contribution to the playschool scene.

But I think things are looking up a bit and hopefully, they will continue improving. Thanks to Sherry for emailing and Karla and Meredith for posting comforting words! I'm sure I'll reread them often as he gets adjusted.

a new schedule: work in progress

As noted last week, Jed has started a playschool program two days per week. He (and his teachers and I) are struggling with separation anxiety and the fact that his normal morning nap (9-11) coincides perfectly with school (9-12). Yesterday he screamed the hardest he's ever screamed without a shot or injury. I left in tears, but with reassuring words from the teachers and even a couple of moms whose kids had done the same thing. He does settle down and seems to have a good time, but he's also exhausted by noon. And last week, he only slept about an hour after school, so by the end of those two days we were really in tatters.

While I don't think anything but time will help the separation anxiety, getting into a new napping routine and getting used to being up all morning will make school days a bit better. Because he managed a three-hour after-school nap yesterday, I thought today we should try to keep the ball rolling. It wasn't too hard to keep him up initially because he had a doctor's appointment and then I ran a quick errand, but between 10:30 and lunch at 11:30 (although I was aiming for noon), I took the path of least resistance and let him do whatever he wanted to. In this instance, that meant standing on his new Jack-in-the-box (which I did have to stop) and dragging out all our napkins and table cloths (and yes, the next time you eat with us, please check your napkin for footprints).

But it worked, or it's worked so far. He ate lunch at 11:30, only a half-hour early, and he's been asleep for an hour so far. Fingers crossed for a three-hour nap! In the meantime, enjoy the pictures.

Aunt Teddie, thanks for the j-i-t-b! I love it!
and by "love it" I mean I love standing on it.
