yesterday

Macon fell asleep on the way home from school. I moved him to the sofa and after about 45 minutes, he started crying and fussing, which was good; it's better (meaning less screaming) for him to wake himself than for me to do it. But after a bit, he got quiet again, so I went to check on him.

This is how I found him: deeply, soundly asleep.

But it was time to get up and collect Jed from school so we could go here:

To the bacon farm? Not exactly.

Jed's class is learning about farms and the class has been divided into pigs and cows with each group collecting as much information about their assigned animal as possible. So, again proving that it's not what you know, but who you know, we got a tour of the pig facilities at NCSU's vet school.

The main take away: Pigs are noisy.

pride

Jed is proud of his origami skills.

Winston could use some pride.

And I am proud of my real reader and my pretend reader!

blog? what blog? plus more ?s by Macon

Where, oh, where have we been? When I last managed a post, Jed had strep. Since then, things have improved considerably, but we've been busy playing catch-up. So here are some photos so you'll remember what the boys look like followed by some important questions.

During the thick of Jed's strep, the boys watched a lot of tv.
Here, the sick child watches tv while the well child naps uncomfortably.

Today, everyone was in top form, as were our camellias.

Notice that Macon's mouth is open. He was probably asking a question. Back in March 2011, I documented Jed's "why" questions, and today, I documented Macon's questions. I know I missed plenty of queries, but I think this represents approximately five hour's worth of questions, or about one question every 5 or 6 minutes. You'll notice that he often asks where I am. I'm not an absentee mother; he asks where I am even when I'm right beside him.

The first question I wrote down was asked in the car this morning and it's the one that inspired me to keep up with today's questions. We were in the car and he asked why I wasn't a rocket ship. Instead of answering, because how could I answer that, I simply said, "5, 4, 3, 2, 1, blast off!!" and stomped on the gas.

Enjoy. And by "enjoy," I mean, "enjoy the fact that you answer far fewer questions during the course of your day."

Why you’re not a rocket ship?
What is this?
Why do birds love to be in the street?
Can you help me with this?
Can you help me with my pants?
When are we going to take him (Winston) on a walk?
Can my ride my bike?
Where are you?
Where are me?
Why my name is Macon?
Can you help me get my helmet off?
Can you read a book to me?
Can you read that again?
Where’s my truck?
Can you help me?
Where are you?
Can you snap my pants?
When is cake ready?
Can my have cake?
When can my have cake?
Where is she going?
Where does she live?
Where’s my blueberries?
Why did you give me this plate?
What’s that?
Where are you?
Is this a clock?
What’s a compass?
What does compass mean?
Where’s my truck?
When are we going to get Jed?
Can I scoop that?
Can I stir that?
Can I mix that up?
How do you make eggs?
Where did my eggs go?
Where did my cheese go?
Can you move my stuff?
Why does the little stuff go on top?
Is that how our house works?
Where is Daddy?
Can you help me?
Can you take my shirt off?
Can you read a book to me?
Did the water go in a pipe?
Is there a pipe under the street?
What is that noise?
What is that?
Where is the elephant?
Where is my blankie?
When Daddy going come home?
Can you fix my excavator?
Where are my scissors?
Can you get my scissors?
Where are we going?
Can you open this?
Where are we going?
Why?
Where is Jed’s school?
Why?

home again, not home alone

For what feels like the millionth day, the boys are spending a school day at home with me. Perhaps this was not the best winter for me to start a work-from-home job. And yes, I take back all of my complaints last winter about how warm the season was and how I missed cold weather and snow. But I am not alone: click here for an improved version of Goodnight Moon.

The one good thing about today's snow day is that Jed is sick. Of course, Jed being sick is bad (and I mean pretty bad: fever, throw-ups, sore throat), but at least he is not actually missing a day of school today.

1:30 update: we've returned from the doctor with a positive strep test and antibiotics. Awesome. As always, we await the next domino.

3:15 update: making sugar cookies is not fun. Making sugar cookies with a crazy person and a sick person is even less fun. But they chose green food coloring, so we now have a batch of sickly-green cookies, which I guess is a fitting color for our household right now.

24-hours-later update (Wednesday afternoon): Jed is much, much better. He could have gone to school today, but the doctor said no school until he had been taking antibiotics for 24 full hours. The other dominoes remain standing.
